Penguins co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burke and the Pittsburgh Penguins celebrate their Stanley Cup win with a downtown parade
Fans lined the victory parade route more than 10 deep as the players, coaches, their families and support staff rolled by in pickup trucks, convertibles and amphibious duck boats.
The parade was held seven years to the day that the 2009 team also celebrated its Stanley Cup championship with a downtown victory lap. That parade drew about 375,000 spectators and city and county public safety officials said this one topped out at 400,000.
The skies largely cleared, though, as fans threw ribbons and confetti, peered out of office windows and from parking garage platforms, and thronged the city's main downtown streets.

"I have the picture at home," Lemieux said. "I looked at the tape last week, but I don't remember it." The play Wolfe captured was the 247th goal of Lemieux's career, a spectacular play in which he split New York defencemen Rich Pilon and Jeff Norton then slipped the puck past goaltender Kelly Hrudey as the Penguins went on to win 5-3. "It illustrates my career on and off the ice," Lemieux said. "I was known for breakaways early in my career and in the early '90s, so this was a perfect photo that we picked."

The Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup championship, the first an NHL team has won back to back in almost 20 years, spawned by far the biggest victory parade of any of the franchise's five titles.

An estimated 650,000 people turned out along a downtown parade route that ended with a rally at Point State Park, city public works and public safety officials said Wednesday. A sunny day with temperatures in the 80s didn't hurt, as the smell of sunscreen was as pungent as the Penguins' love in a city that boasts, officially, only 305,000 residents.

Roughly 400,000 fans attended last year's celebration, which was the biggest for any of the team's Stanley Cup championships to that point.

MARIO LEMIEUX YOUTH HOCKEY DISPLAY
NOVEMBER 3, 2016
The Pittsburgh Penguins officially unveiled a Mario Lemieux youth hockey display case at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.
The unique case is a tribute to Mario's amateur career while growing up in Montreal - from his days with the neighborhood Ville Emard Hurricanes to his record-breaking years with the Laval Voisins of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
"Hockey fans know all about Mario's tremendous NHL accomplishments," said David Morehouse, president and CEO of the Penguins, "but, given the focus on youth hockey at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, we thought it would be great for kids and parents to see these tribute items from his youth hockey career."
Mario and his family provided many of the items for the case - including an early pair of skates; his jersey, sweater and team jacket from Ville Emard; a puck and stick from his 50-goal season in midget AAA hockey; and his Team Canada jersey and a signed team stick from the 1983 World Junior Championships. In addition, there are photos of Mario and two young teammates from his Ville Emard neighborhood who also went on to play in the NHL (and with the Penguins) - Marc Bergevin and J.J. Daigneault.

GREATEST NHL MOMENT
December 16, 2017
Mario Lemieux's epic five-goal game was voted greatest moment in NHL history. Mario Lemieux, Le Magnifique, scored five goals five ways for the Pittsburgh Penguins against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 31, 1988.
He scored at even strength, on the power play, on the penalty kill,on a penalty shot and into an empty net. "It means a lot," said Lemieux, who flew to Ottawa for the announcement during the 2017 Scotiabank NHL100 Classic between the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators at Lansdowne Park.

He said he thought of Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky and the Canadiens of the 1960s and '70s. For the fans to pick my five goals five ways is something very special, and I'm honored," he said. "I certainly want to thank all the fans for picking that moment."
As part of its Centennial celebration, the NHL asked a panel of broadcasters from NBC Sports Group, NHL Network, Sportsnet and TVA Sports to select 64 moments. Then the NHL placed the 64 moments into a bracket-style format divided into four regions: Calder, Hart, Norris and Vezina. Fans voted from Oct. 18 through Nov. 28.
This, in order, is what Lemieux's five goals five ways defeated head-to-head: Peter and Anton Stastny's eight points each in one game in 1981, Gretzky's 802nd goal to pass Gordie Howe for the all-time lead in 1994, the New York Islanders' fourth straight championship in 1983, Darryl Sittler's record 10-point game in 1976, Gretzky's 39 goals in 50 games in 1981 and Orr's signature Stanley Cup-winning overtime goal in 1970.

The game stopped during the second period. A red carpet rolled out. In Lansdowne Park before 33,959 fans, Lemieux walked out with Guy Lafleur, who presented him with a specially commissioned painting by artist Tony Harris, a portrait with a list of the five goals five ways. The painting will hang at Lemieux's home in Pittsburgh.
